What We're Learning

2024-2025

This year we are traveling the globe and learning about different continents, countries, and currencies.

Our earliest learners start their day off with a letter of the week, calendaring, and a weather report. The upper learners have “Question of the Day” journal prompts (writing or drawing depending of age/abilities) and some basic handwriting.

Nutrition, health, and cooking are integrated through exploring healthy everyday options as well as recipes from different countries.

Arts and crafts are another favorite that connect concepts in creativity.

Science experiments will be done throughout the year, connecting facts and/or environments from different countries allowing learners to explore these concepts with hands on learning.

Additionally, the learners each volunteer in the snack shack at lunch – where learners get to sell our healthy snacks, count change, and figure their profit for the day.

Finally, the last hour of the day is spent in community free play outside (weather permitting).

Our Team

Beth Nottingham

“Dr. Beth” Nottingham has over 20 years of experience working with children in a variety of settings as a speech pathologist. She currently owns a private practice providing speech, language and feeding therapy services to infants and children around the Baltimore area. She began homeschooling during COVID in 2020. “Homegrown Learning” was started to provide social and learning opportunities for her own children when schools were shut down. Realizing there is a lack of educational options for homeschoolers, homegrown learning has continued to be a resource for families. In her free time, she likes to hike, cook, and watch her children play sports!

Mandy Reuter

Mandy has been with Homegrown since Spring of 2021, our pilot program. Mandy comes to us with years of experience with children, she has been in the pre-k setting, helped with K-5 as a volunteer in the public school system and has many years volunteering as a Sunday School teacher as well as a 4H leader and volunteer. Mandy is very involved with her Church and heads up their fundraising. Mandy loves arts and crafts and heads up most of our art projects. Mandy and her family live on a small farm in Sparks, they raise pigs and chickens and are hoping to add cows and goats to the mix soon. Mandy has been married to Keith for 25 years, they share 3 Daughters and a Grandson.

Tori Ramirez

Tori is a certified teacher with an undergraduate degree in elementary education. She has experience with a wide range of learners inside the traditional classroom setting and now with being a part of the homeschool community for 3 years. With her knowledge of curriculum and instruction she does most of the lesson planning for Homegrown and various behind the scenes tasks. Tori is a mom of 2 under 2 and looks forward to having her own children participate in Homegrown.
